TIME 4 FAT LOSS SERIES

Is all fat bad and can it make you slimmer?

The short answer to the first part of the question is no, while the answer to the second is yes.

First of all, it is important to understand that fat serves a variety of functions in the body that are essential for good health, such as providing an energy source, protecting vital organs, acting as a thermal insulator, and contributing to the structure of the cell membranes and the production of hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. That’s why it’s important to keep the right amount.

White Fat vs Brown Fat: What’s the Difference?

Second, it is important to understand that there are two different types of fat or adipose tissue: White adipose tissue (WAT) is the fat storage tissue that comes to mind when we think of body fat. When our energy intake exceeds our energy expenditure, our body stores the excess calories here. Brown adipose tissue (BBT), on the other hand, produces heat and thus helps us to expend energy.

BAT is sometimes referred to as ‘baby fat’ because it is more abundant in babies, where it has the job of producing heat to ensure the survival of the baby.
It was traditionally believed that as we mature, most of the structures in BAT responsible for brown color and heat production, known as mitochondria, disappear and the tissue becomes similar in function and appearance to white fat.
However, research has shown that some BAT is still present in adults on the neck and chest and is more common in women.

The amount of BAT an individual has is usually inversely related to his body mass index (BMI), especially in the elderly. In other words, the more BBT you have, the lower your BMI is likely to be. In short, BBT can help us increase our energy expenditure, reduce white fat storage and regulate blood sugar.

Can we expand our BAT stores?

There are a number of things we can do to increase our BAT stores. Among which:

  • Spending more time outside
  • Keeping our house at a lower temperature (17-18 ° C),
  • Fitness
  • Following the signals of hunger and fullness of our body
  • Getting plenty of sleep
  • Management of stress levels.

Conclusion

Both brown and white fat can play an important role in promoting good health if we maintain proper levels, which research suggests is best achieved by making certain healthy lifestyle choices.
